In India, it is common for power bills to spike during summer due to the increased use of cooling appliances like air-conditioners and coolers. During winters, however, domestic and commercial setups witness a dip in the bill as the same appliances are shut down or used sporadically.
While electricity bills for domestic units may vary from household to household, it is not expected to reach five figures from the November to March.
However, a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj recently received the shock of his life when he received an electricity bill or Rs 23 crore for his home connection of 2 kilowatts, reported ANI. But the bill showed consumption of only 178 units of electricity.
The amount charged was Rs 23,67,71,524 and Abdul Basit had to run from pillar to post to mitigate the problem.
"It seems like I've received the entire bill of Uttar Pradesh. Even if I earn money for my entire life, I'll still be unable to pay this exorbitant amount,” Basit told ANI.
An executive engineer told ANI that the bill be will be rectified soon and payment will only be sought after a thorough investigation.
"Due to some anomalies in reading such kinds of bills are being generated. It would be changed and meter reading will be taken again. Only after a bill is found correct, the consumer will be asked to pay for it," said engineer Shadab Ahmed
