5 reasons you are losing weight and how to deal with it

With her incredible acting prowess and several awards and accolades, Vidya Balan is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors in Bollywood. But the Parineeta actress has regularly come under scanner for her weighty issues! The National Award-winning actress, who turned 40 last month, recently opened up about her battle with fat-shaming and her struggles of dealing with her weight and hormonal problems. Earlier, actor Sara Ali Khan too spoke of her battle with weight loss and PCOS, also referred to as PCOD.
In a recent interview to Filmfare, the Tumhari Sulu actress star revealed that it’s not easy for her to lose weight due to her hormonal problems. Vidya also talked about her struggle with body acceptance all her life.
I’ve had hormonal problems all my life. It’s probably because of the judgment I’ve carried around my body. When I was a teenager, people would tell me, ‘You’ve got such a pretty face, why don’t you lose some weight?’ It’s not a nice thing to say to anyone. Be it a child or a grown-up. So, I’d starve myself, I’d go through crazy exercise regimens and lose weight. Then the hormonal issue would settle for a bit before it reared its head again. I guess it was my body’s way of revolting because in wanting it to be what it was not, I was constantly rejecting it,” she said during the Interview.”
Further, opening up about her weight loss routines and the body-shaming she has experienced throughout her career, Vidya also shared how she once stopped watching her shots on the monitor at shoots.
“Years ago, I stopped watching my shots on the monitor at shoots because I’d look at the monitor and be thinking, Am I looking fat?”
“'Even at my thinnest, I’ve always felt fat. Weight loss, weight gain, weight loss, weight gain was my pattern for as long as I can remember,” the actress added.
Reasons you’re having trouble with weight loss
Truth is, being overweight often has nothing to do with diet or fitness routine. For many people, the problem could be caused due to hormonal imbalance or medication. If you’ve not been able to shed those extra kilos despite following a weight loss diet, you need to determine whether there’s a medical condition underlying your weight problem.
This is important because there are several medical conditions that can cause weight gain or disrupt your weight loss journey. Among them are -
Hypothyroidism: Also known as underactive thyroid or low thyroid, it is a condition in which your body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone to help burn stored fat. This can slow down your metabolism, making you store more fat than you can burn.
Cushing’s syndrome: A condition caused by having too much of a hormone called cortisol in your body. This can lead to a buildup of fat in the face, upper back, and abdomen.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. Common symptoms include irregular menstrual bleeding, acne, excessive facial hair, thinning hair or hair loss, difficulty getting pregnant, and weight gain that is not caused by excessive eating.
Chronic stress: Your body can produce chemical substances - like the hormone cortisol - that make you more likely to store fat, especially around the waist, when you live with anxiety, stress, or grief. Weight gain caused due to chronic stress can wreak havoc on your mind and body, increasing your risk of serious health problems.
Depression: Weight gain, particularly abdominal obesity, is linked to depression. The problem is that many people who are depressed often turn to eating to ease their emotional distress.
But, it’s not just medical conditions that can make you pile on the pounds. According to health experts, some medications - such as drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes, schizophrenia, asthma and lupus – birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, etc, can cause weight gain or keep you from losing it.
Weight gain caused by medication or a medical condition: What you can do about it
If you suspect you’re gaining weight or having trouble slimming down because you have a medical condition or medication, consult with your doctor right away. Weight gain can be very troublesome and dangerous for your health. And of course, ensure that you make healthier food choices by focusing on nutrient-dense fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy fats while avoiding or cutting back on processed food. Stay physically active and try to get more exercise, although it is not easy to lose those pounds gained due to a medical condition or medication. It’s not impossible and you can do it! Perhaps, your physician can help you find a solution to your existing problems.
Coming back to Vidya, the actress will be seen in Mission Mangal with her former co-star Akshay Kumar
