Foldable smartphones have become the latest trend, every major smartphone maker seem to be working on developing a device with a bendable display. Xiaomi, LG, Samsung, Vivo, Motorola and now Apple has also joined the queue. A patent filed by Apple on February 14 clearly suggests that the Cupertino-based company does not want to be left out. The patent shows numerous sketches with an inward and outward folding design of the smartphone.
The patent application which was published on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website, describes the sketches as “Flexible Display Devices”. It further elaborates, “Flexible displays may be mounted to the housing portions overlapping the hinges. When the housing portions in a device are rotated relative to each other, the flexible display may bend. Hinges may be configured to allow the flexible display to be placed in a front-to-front configuration in which the active side of the display faces itself or a back-to-back configuration in which the active portions of the display face away from each other.”
The drawings in the application show a clamshell device which looks similar to rumoured updated Moto Razr, Motorola’s upcoming foldable smartphone. The second and the third sketch hints at the hinges that would enable the smartphone to fold smoothly. However, the first few designs do not give us a clear idea of the folding mechanism that Apple might opt for but it does indicate that the company might be working on to feature a number of housing portions with hinges.

Few images also indicates that the smartphone could possibly have a tri-fold which means it can possibly be folded in three layers. The diagrams in the patent application seem to be just concept images. There is a possibility that Apple might have just begun with the process of researching and implementing various ideas in the form of designs to get a clearer idea as to how the smartphone may work. It is too early to say how and what exactly foldable iPhone may look like but Apple is certainly working on to bring a bendable smartphone in a near future.
