Signs and symptoms of Glaucoma. Treatment of Glaucoma

10th to 16th March 2019 is being celebrated as World Glaucoma Week. Glaucoma affects the optic nerve of the eyes, causing damage that worsens over time. Glaucoma is linked to the buildup of pressure in the eye and can also be inherited. It does not make an appearance until later in life.

Glaucoma can be caused due to a deterioration of the optic nerve, which can increase the pressure of the fluid in the eye, towards the front part of it, which can cause damage. Glaucoma can be of two types – open angle – which is quite common and looks normal, but the fluid doesn't flow out as it should. The other type is angle-closure glaucoma, where the drain space becomes too narrow, and the eye is unable to drain out the fluid. Here is more information about glaucoma – its signs, symptoms and treatment.

Signs and symptoms of Glaucoma
there are usually no signs or symptoms of the problem until it is in its later stages. Loss of peripheral or side vision is one of the early signs. When the pressure in the eye increases, it can lead to headaches, severe eye pain, blurred vision, the appearance of halos, and other similar symptoms like:

Vision loss
Redness in the eye
Hazy eye
Nausea, vomiting
Narrowed vision
Treatment of Glaucoma
If a person experiences any of the above symptoms, he or she should visit the doctor at the earliest. If diagnosed with glaucoma, the doctor will treat it with eye drops, laser surgery or microsurgery, depending on the case.

Eyedrops

this treatment can help in reducing the formation of the fluid or increase its flow out of the eye, to reduce pressure inside the eye. This may have certain side effects like allergies, redness, stinging, etc.

Laser surgery

Laser surgery can help people with open-angle glaucoma and can stop fluid blockage if you have angle-closure glaucoma.

Microsurgery

Microsurgery is basically a process where the doctor creates a channel to drain the fluid to release the pressure from the eye. An external tube or similar items may be introduced to drain the fluid. The surgery can have side effects like temporary or permanent vision loss, bleeding or infection.
