A recent report by PTI has revealed that 377 people have lost their lives battling swine flu while over 1200 people have been infected with the HINI virus all across the country. The health ministry has asked all state governments to increase surveillance and keep beds vacant for people who may have an acute problem. Early detection of the disease is being given priority.

The virus is spreading rapidly and it is important to keep yourself safe and prevent the disease. A few facts about swine flu can help in better prevention. Here is what you must know about the virus H1N1 and swine flu to be able to handle the condition better.

You can prevent swine flu
Swine flu is not difficult to prevent if you actively take care of your health. Follow proper hygiene – wash hands properly before eating, sanitize, etc. to make sure you do not allow the virus to enter your body through your nose or mouth.

Do not take symptoms lightly
Symptoms of swine flu are common symptoms of many diseases but when the number of infected people is so high, if you see symptoms of swine flu, make sure you do not take them lightly. Seeing a doctor and getting yourself tested is the first step to take in case you see symptoms. Early detection can actually help you avoid the disease altogether, or recover faster.

Vaccines for human seasonal flu do not provide protection against swine flu
The H1N1 swine flu virus is very different from the H1N1 human virus. Therefore, a vaccine to protect you from regular seasonal flu is not enough to provide protection against swine flu.

Swine flu can be fatal
While most people do not die of swine flu, some people with the flu who are in the high-risk category can become very weak and die of the disease. The best thing to do is to practice extra care and prevent it.

Swine flu can spread in these ways
Swine flu can spread by kissing, sharing drinks (saliva), coughs or sneezes (air), skin to skin contact or touching a contaminated item and then touching your mouth or nose.
