In a controversial decision, a university in Egypt reportedly expelled a female student after a video showing her hugging a man went viral on social media. The Al-Azhar University justified their decision to expel the student by claiming that her actions had “undermined the school’s reputation.”
In the viral video, a young man can be seen going down on his knees with a bouquet of flowers before a woman. He then proceeds to hug the girl in elation in what appears to be a marriage proposal.
As per the news agency AFP, the video of the ‘proposal’ was not filmed at the premises of Al-Azhar University campus but at the campus of Mansoura University located in the country’s north. Al-Azhar is a branch of Egypt’s highest Sunni Muslim authority and implements strict segregation of genders. Egypt is Muslim-majority country and propagates largely conservative values.
The Al-Azhar University spokesman Ahmed Zarie told the news agency that the educational institution "decided to expel the young girl definitively.” He alleged that the video had generated a “public outcry” and the student had been expelled she had portrayed a “bad image” of the prestigious Al-Azhar University.
The spokesperson added that a hug between unmarried men and women violates"the values and principles of society,” AFP reported. He, however, noted that the students can appeal the expulsion decision.
Meanwhile, the young man in the video, is also likely to face sanctions, AFP quoted a spokesman for Mansoura University as saying. The spokesperson added that the school’s disciplinary council was due to meet on Monday to decide on the boy’s quantum of “punishment”.
