how dangerous can allergies be

Singer Sonu Nigam was recently admitted to the ICU of Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai due to a swollen eye. He shared pictures of his face with the allergic reaction and thanked all his fans for the love and support. He also advised everyone to not take allergies lightly.
Sonu Nigam, who happened to be allergic to seafood had to learn the lesson the hard way. He told his fans that if the hospital had not been nearby, his trachea would have swollen up further and lead to asphyxiation – which is a condition where a part of the body or an organ is completely deprived of oxygen. The singer may be right about his advice to not take allergies lightly
What can you be allergic to?
According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, as many as 50 million people in the US suffer from some or the other type of allergic disease. Though there is no specific list of things or food items that one can be allergic to, the most common allergies are that of dust, medication, insect stings, pollens, etc.
Why are allergies caused?
The immune system of the body is designed to attack or remove anything that is harmful to the body. The immune system attacks germs and similar unwanted entities that enter the body and fight against them to keep us free from diseases. However, sometimes, the system has a similar response to something that is not even a threat to the body. These substances are called allergens. When these substances enter your body they can cause allergic reactions.
How dangerous are allergies?
While most allergies do not have much reaction and it is limited to a rash, sneezes, or vomiting, allergies can be really dangerous and also life-threatening, like in the case of Sonu Nigam. Chronic inflammation can damage tissues, making it difficult for them to perform their regular functions. If someone suffers from an asthma attack during the inflammation caused due to an allergic reaction, it can be fatal. Major inflammation can also lead to asphyxiation
